Our sand-filled elephant stalls are the newest innovation to address the welfare of captive-held elephants. These deep sand pits help to prevent pressure wounds, arthritis, musculoskeletal degeneration and other physical ailments that result from elephants standing on unnaturally hard surfaces. We are excited to include this husbandry improvement in our new barn.
Maintenance of sand-filled stalls requires different tools and equipment. The traditional wheel barrow used to collect elephant waste is useless in the sand. A power trackbarrow is the required tool for the job.
