Tarra moved to the Refuge in November 2021 after a decade apart from her lifelong companion Carol. The warm South Georgia climate and facilities specifically designed to meet the needs of aging elephants make the Refuge an ideal home for Tarra. Here, she can once again form close physical bonds, not only with other elephants but also with the other species she loves, including humans and dogs. The mild climate and natural substrate of the Refuge enable Tarra to be outdoors and physically active every day, benefiting her aging bones and muscles and slowing the progression of her osteomyelitis.
The cost of Tarra's care for a year is $145,000, which covers her food, supplements, veterinary care, caregivers, and fuel for the 4-wheeler used to deliver daily provisions and care. Can you help care for Tarra? Your donation makes a significant difference.
Tarra has spent a lifetime, fifty years, helping people understand her species. Through her actions, her ancestral wisdom has been shared, enabling people to realize how precious this adored species is and why efforts to protect them and preserve their wildlands are paramount. Tarra, like many of her kind, is creating an enduring legacy that will benefit her species for many decades to come.
By contributing to A Year of Care for Tarra, you will become a cherished member of her extended family, ensuring her continued happiness and well-being.
